When To Refurbish Fleet vs. Buying New
Running your industrial operation smoothly, efficiently, and cost effectively is essential, but not always easy to do. When your equipment starts to see performance degeneration, business owners and site managers are faced with a decision: to buy new equipment or to refurbish the old equipment. At Rental Pump Parts, we’re here to help with parts and a refurbishment service to help you preserve your budget and ensure top performance of your pumps! Keep reading to learn more about when to refurbish your fleet of pumps instead of buying new ones.
Saving on Costs
Refurbishment, if done at the right time and on the right equipment can provide significant cost savings as compared to buying new equipment. The three important factors to consider are the ROI of refurbishment, the age and condition of the machine as a whole, and lastly the cost of refurbishment itself.
Checking Your Pump’s Condition
Understanding if a pump is better refurbished or replaced, your process will start with an inspection of the easily visible features: paint, missing parts, belts, visual inspection of the impeller, etc. Then, you must check the major mechanical components: bearings, shaft, cut water wear, impeller wear, pitting of backplate from cavitation, etc. Finally, the focus shifts to electrical and mechanical components that are not easily inspected without the aid of computer diagnostics. If you find that any of these are beyond repair or part replacement, replacing may not be your best option.
Different Classes
When you do find that a pump is better refurbished than replaced, Rental Pump Parts makes the process simple! We divide the unit up into 3 classes of service.
- Class A - For a flat rate, we will disassemble, and rebuild the bearing block and priming system, re-assemble, and paint it. Our customers usually send us their pump ends on a pallet to save on shipping and we take care of everything within about five working days and return to them on the same pallet. Oftentimes, the Rental Pump Parts team can coat internal faces that have seen pitting from cavitation with our proprietary, ceramic two-part epoxy and save thousands in replacement parts.
- Class B - This service is for the drive unit itself. For this service, we send the engine or electric motor off to our trusted partners, where they either rebuild or rewind the electric motors before being returned to us and married back up with the pump-end. We completely replace the wiring harness and control panel of the customers choosing to ensure a reliable unit for years to come.
- Class C - This service includes work on the frame, fuel cell, or canopy, depending on the model.
Choosing to Refurbish
When it comes to refurbishing, you can save about half the cost of buying new, and in many cases, refurbishment may seem like a no-brainer! A good example of a typical refurbishment service is this:
The cost of refurbishing a six-inch pump-end runs around $7,000.00, which is compared to $20,000 for a new one, and our refurbishing service includes a 2000-hour warranty for the work we complete, meaning that your pump is covered for many uses once it comes back to you in working condition. With the current structure of the industrial pump market, refurbishment is most cost-effective for mid-sized equipment and larger, however, if it makes sense for your operation, Rental Pump Parts is proud to help!
